Diversity, inclusion and change

I have the opportunity to work with diversity, discrimination and equality in smaller and larger organizations. Working with diversity can be demanding and an effective and supportive methodology is needed. We find that the use of The Four Rooms of Change is a powerful way to kick-start the analysis with a high degree of participation. And the action planning also takes place with the whole system in the room!
The Four Rooms of Change is a theory that deals with change, with what happens with people and organizations in transition and with how they can influence the change process by taking responsibility for their emotions and actions. Four Rooms offers the popular concept of “Diversity and Inclusion ” a whole new …

The best performing CEO in the world

Lars Sørensen of Novo Nordisk reflects on the forces that propelled him to the top of the Harvard Business Review’s ranking  of the best-performing CEOs in the world 2015:
– “I don’t like this notion of the “best-performing CEO in the world.” That’s an American perspective—you lionize individuals. I would say I’m leading a team that is collectively creating one of the world’s best-performing companies.”

Want to find out what engages your employees, but have a tight budget?

Recently I facilitated a workshop with the purpose to spot opportunities to drive engagement all the way out to blue collars in an organisation with more than 40,000 employees. Many large organisations have surveys to measure this, and to benchmark with other companies in e.g. the industry. This organisation had that as well, and they based their ideas partly on the results from those surveys. However, they went beyond the results and carried out more than 100 interviews with different employees to find out what really triggered them. After two and half days of hard work, they ended up with three tangible ideas that they presented to their CEO and got a “good to go”.
Engagement is of course interesting in …

Be global, act local – or risk being lost in translation

A key challenge for a global business is to be global yet act local. This challenge applies both to the business strategy as it enters and grows new markets, as well as it’s organisational leadership strategy as it develops local capabilities in support of the business ambition.
Based in Cape Town at the tip of the African continent, and as a recent addition to the PlanB team, this was top of mind for me as I went through a train-the-trainer process to ensure that PlanB’s global client acquired a local PlanB partner who would support the South African business unit to benefit from a roll out of a global academy programme. I intuited that my own learning process would reflect that …

Impossible and now – how leaders are creating the uncorporation

“Employees today are uncorporate individualists. For a CEO, this makes life almost impossible. How do you make an uncorporate culture, yet still meet corporate targets? How do you liberate people, without unleashing chaos? How do you give people a purpose, without imposing an ideology? How do you lead, when everyone’s their own leader? And how do you do it all fast?”
In a report from Wolff Olins based on conversations with 43 global CEO and 400 surveyed employees, the conclusion is that following creative checklist seems to be at play:

Take your place: See yourself and your organisation as a citizen of the universe, not the centre of it.
Let it go: You don’t have to have all the answers, nor should you – let expert practitioners lead the work.
Culture …

We are now a part of Mannaz

PlanB has a new owner.
The company has been acquired by Danish Mannaz A/S. (www.mannaz.com)
Mannaz and PlanB have been collaborating through the years and have noticed how rewarding and smooth it has been, almost certainly because our core values coincide. We both work passionately with leadership and organizational development, on the assumption that people are central to everything. Mannaz also means human being. We both have a strong Nordic connection, working with highly effective modern methods of learning – with a solid basis in research.
Our shared values, Mannaz’s efforts to strengthen their position in Sweden and PlanB’s ambition to take on more international assignments constitute the reasons for joining forces.
Our merger establishes a new and strong Nordic operator with international capacity …

7 steps to develop a culture that supports your vision

Some companies seem to believe that culture is first created by the employees and then reflected by their behavior. This is by all means true, but allowing the culture to emerge on its own, might or might not support the companys’ vision. Moreover, different cultures may develop between different teams, departments or units, leading to decreased cohesion as well as potentially increased ”silo”-behavior. Other organisations take the matter in their own hands and stimulate behavior amongst their employees in order to create the culture they want and need.
Personally, I believe that the latter is the formula for success; securing core values in an organisation, with a clear link straight to the mission and vision as well as making sure strategies …

Transformation and change is business as usual

KPMG has published the Transformation Survey. In it we can connect the dots.

Business transformation has taken hold across the broad corporate landscape, and there is a correlation between a formal process and transformation itself. Companies that have a formal process are more vigilant about assessing their business and operating models against their business strategy and are more active in transformation.
Thanks for scooping it up: Kenneth Mikkelsen at LeadershipABC.
